Accommodation Guide

Starting out at university is a big change! There are lots of choices available, like private accommodation or halls. We recommend halls of residence, as it’ll allow you to get the full university experience and meet lots and lots of new people both on your course and on other courses.

Although this guide was made to summarise everything, it’s always best to look on the university’s website.

Accommodation at UEA

At the University of East Anglia, there’s lots of different accommodation types to choose from. The famous listed Norfolk and Suffolk Terrace buildings (pictured above) part of the Ziggurats are actually Grade II* listed. It was judged by Heritage England to be of particular national importance or special interest.

All first year students, who live more than 4 miles from UEA are guaranteed accommodation. All accomodation at UEA is self catered, however it makes all halls very friendly and kitchens make great social areas. There are quite a few different halls of residence – some on campus, some in the Student Village, and one in the city centre. We’ve summarised UEA’s website in a table below.

All of the halls are self-catered, so in the kitchens you can expect to find a fridge, freezer, microwave, hob, ironing board, grill and cupboards. Some kitchens have toasters, whilst others don’t.

Bring your own cooking utensils, but wait until you arrive to bring things like toasters – there might be one already there. Not all kitchens have ovens, so we’ve outlined in this guide which ones have and which ones don’t.

Private Accommodation

If you don’t want to live in halls, as Norwich is a university city, there’s a lot of private-sector housing to choose from.

  • Every much, the university holds a housing week, where they give talks about renting.
  • The University has a list of approved landlords.
  • Most students live in the ‘Golden Triangle’, which is an area enclosed by Bluebell Road, Unthank Road and Earlham Roads.

There is also some accommodation further along on Dereham Road, but there is no bus between here and the university.

Average rent is £200-£300 a month.
